2009 2nd UnCaged Toy Piano call for submissions: VIRTUOSITY
For 2009, the theme for the UnCaged Toy Piano is Virtuosity. We are seeking works that are unique and challenging specifically for the toy piano.
Here are the rules for this year’s competition:
1. Pieces must be written for one toy piano only
2. Electronics is optional, but must work for Mac OS X with an Intel processor
3. Pieces can be of any length
4. Inventions of prepared toy piano techniques are also encouraged
The UnCaged Toy Piano is open to composers of all ages and nationalities.
Judges:

Wendy Mae Chambers, composer and toy pianist
Margaret Leng Tan, toy pianist, pianist
Nathan Davis, composer
Judges will select winning works appropriate to this year’s theme. Winning works (2-4 pieces) will be performed by Phyllis Chen in the Fall of 2009 at New York City. Works will also be included in Phyllis’s 2009-2010 performance cycle across the US.
Grand Prize : $1000
Peculiar Prize: a toy piano selected by Phyllis Chen
The Peculiar Prize goes to a piece that displays virtuosity in an unconventional way (i.e. extended techniques, prepared toy piano, installation, etc.) Grand Prize winner may also win the Peculiar Prize.
Please send one copy of the score and a short biography. There are many ways to view “Virtuosity”. We encourage you to include a brief note on how your work fits into this year’s theme. DVDs and CDs are helpful, but not mandatory.
